The origin of the words Wicca or Wiccan may possibly be traced to the Indo-European words ‘weik’ or ‘wikk’, both of which are related to witchcraft- the creative powers of the witches derived from the beliefs and practices of the Old Religion also called Paganism.
Pagans, the followers of Paganism or old religious system believe in the forces, motifs and symbols of Nature such as sun and moon and worship them as gods and goddesses. They also use the objects of nature such as herbs, potions, roots, barks, stones and oils etc as tools of treatment or rituals. This is how witchcraft was practiced in ancient times and continues even today.
As mentioned above the words witchcraft and wicca/wiccan are related to each other. The practitioners of witchcraft perform magic based upon the elements of Nature or Paganism and those who believe in the forces of nature and worship them are called wiccans. So the words witches and wiccans are generally used interchangeably with each other. They are like the two sides of a palm or hand.
To put the whole issue in clearer and understandable perspective, while wiccan-ism is a belief system, witchcraft is its practical side— one is theory and the other is practice. Witches put the beliefs in the forces and symbols of Nature into practice by performing rituals and saying prayers to bring about the magic of transformation. Hence their practice is called witchcraft.
Witchcraft is basically an act of meditation that involves concentration on the subject of transformation or magic. The use of rituals, symbols, objects like pentacles or drawings, incense, chants, candles etc only help in the process of concentration or the development of will power to cause transformation or magic.
How to be a wiccan?
Witchcraft or wiccanism is a very liberal and democratic spiritual or religious belief system. Any one with a determination, dedication and above all the will power to learn and practice it can become a wiccan. You can formally join a commune of Wiccans or even practice it independently by acquiring knowledge from books and literature on Wicca.
